The founder

Ego Maduekwe is a Lagos/London based fashion house creating clothes for women who dress with ease, curiosity and a strong sense of self.

Founded by architect-turned-designer Ego Maduekwe, the house brings together sculptural form, expressive colour and Nigerian craftsmanship in a distinctly modern language.

An architect's training is about structure before it's about decoration — how a form holds itself, where weight falls, what a space needs and what it doesn't. That instinct carries into the clothes: silhouettes built from the inside out, embroidery and cutwork used to shape fabric rather than sit on top of it. The same instinct shapes how the house treats Nigerian reference points — never as literal decoration or nostalgia, always reworked into something that hasn't existed before.

Each piece is made in Lagos by a small studio of artisans, many of whom have been with the house since it began in 2007. The embroidery and cutwork are worked by hand, too labour-intensive to be rushed — so every collection is produced in limited runs.

Each collection is shaped by the textures of life around us. The architecture of Lagos, the movement of wrappers, the abundance of Nigerian gardens and the beauty of objects made by hand. These influences appear in engineered prints, fluid draping, traditional textiles and embroidery: never as nostalgia, but as clothes for the present.

A piece should be worn by the woman, not the other way round. Presence without volume, because a woman secure in her own style has nothing to prove. Feminine, never sweet. Made to bring joy to the woman who wears it.

Each piece is designed to be lived in, collected and kept. Clothes with presence and ease, made to become part of a woman's life.

Before founding the house, Ego's earlier label, Alter Ego — a contemporary womenswear line she launched in 2007, reworking traditional textiles for a modern eye — was featured in Forbes Woman Africa and WWD, and shown on the runway at Lagos Fashion and Design Week.
